Famous for the abundance of beautiful islands and quaint coves, Greece is a firm favourite with sailors thanks to the sheer diversity that it offers. But it’s not just the scenery that captivates its visitors – the culinary delights that await those who visit are equally as mesmerising!
From typical Greek salads to delectable lamb dishes that fall off the bone, the food that awaits you on a Greek yacht charter will have your mouth tingling and your waistband expanding! Here, we take a look at our top five dishes to try when on your next yacht charter in Greece.
Greek Gyros
Greek gyros are meat based dishes cooked on a vertical rotisserie, not too dissimilar to that of a donner kebab but with WAY more flavour! The dish is typically made with pork or chicken but beef and lamb are sometimes used as an alternative. The meat is marinated with oregano, thyme, paprika and garlic amongst other herbs and spices and cooked until golden. Served in a flatbread with salad and tzatziki, this delicious dish can be eaten on the go or as a main course with fries.
Kleftiko
A real Greek delicacy, Kleftiko is a firm favourite with us here at DYC! Wrapped in parchment this slowly cooked cut of lamb is rubbed with rosemary, oregano, garlic, cinnamon, lemon juice and olive oil and is a dish not to miss when you’re on a yacht charter to Greece. Often cooked with potatoes that soak up all of the mouth-watering juices that lined the parchment, kleftiko can be served with local vegetables such as artichokes or courgettes or a traditional Greek salad. Pair with a class of ouzo for an authentic Greek treat.
Stifado
A traditional Greek beef stew, stifado is often found on the menu when visiting Greece and has everything you want from a main meal! Made with tender cuts of beef or veal, the meat is browned to retain it’s juiciness and then cooked in tomatoes, olive oil, herbs and spices and caramelised shallots for around eight hours or until it falls away from a fork. The mixture of the meat and herbs create a tantalising sauce that, coupled with vegetable and potatoes, make a hearty dinner perfect after a day exploring the beautiful cobalt Aegean or Ionian seas!
Dolmades
An ideal dish for a light lunch of a snack on the go, dolmades are a great little meze dish that are versatile and delicious. The only stable ingredient of dolmades is the dark green vine or grape leaves used to case the surprise addition at their centre. They can be made with rice, meat, such as lamb or beef, peppers and cheese and are topped with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Yum!
Baklava
And finally, something for those with a sweet tooth! Baklava gets its roots from nearby Turkey but is a popular dessert in Greece. The dish consists of filo pastry filled with walnuts or pistachios mixed with nutmeg and cinnamon, and covered in a sticky, sweet syrup consisting of sugar, cloves, lemon juice and cinnamon. Pair with a vanilla ice cream and some dessert wine and this will be the perfect ending to any Greek dining experience.
