Picture this…you’re on deck, the sun is setting on the horizon, there’s a slight breeze cooling the warm air as you put your feet up and enjoy a nice cold cocktail…heaven, right? But which cocktail takes your fancy? Whether you’re on a yacht charter in the Caribbean or sailing around the Mediterranean, there’s a tipple to suit the culture you’re in. Here, we share our top five cocktails to enjoy on a yacht charter, all of which make perfect accompaniments to your dream sailing holiday. 

Aperol Spritz

Aperol Spritz

Add a little dolce vita to your next sailing holiday with this classic from Italy. Colourful and tangy, this Italian classic is a great addition to any yacht charter.

How to make an aperol spritz

Ingredients

  • 60 ml of Aperol
  • 90 ml of Prosecco or other sparkling white wine
  • 25 ml of sparkling water
  • 1 slice of orange

Method

  1. Add the ice cubes to a wine glass
  2. Pour all the ingredients except the orange slice
  3. Stir 
  4. Garnish with half a slice of orange

Painkiller

Painkiller cocktail

Our friends in the British Virgin Islands know how to party, and while on your next sailing adventure in the Caribbean, be sure to enjoy the BVIs signature cocktail, the painkiller – it literally will take all the pain away with its fruity flavour and refreshing taste.

How to make a painkiller

Ingredients

  • 25ml of soggy dollar rum (this is our preference but any other dark rum can be used)
  • 5ml of coconut milk
  • 20 ml of pineapple juice
  • 5ml of orange juice
  • Pinch of fresh nutmeg
  • Slice of pineapple

Method

  1. Use a shaker to make the perfect painkiller
  2. Add all of the ingredients and handful of ice to the shaker and mix vigorously
  3. Pour by filtering into the glass containing crushed ice
  4. Pour and add a slice of pineapple

Mojito

Mojito

One of the world’s most popular cocktails, the mojito! This simple yet refreshing drink makes it the perfect cocktail for your next bareboat yacht charter. 

How to make a mojito 

Ingredients

  • 50ml of white rum
  • A large handful of mint leaves
  • 1/2 a lime, juiced
  • 2 tbsp caster sugar
  • 60ml of sparkling water
  • Crushed ice cubes

Method

  1. Place mint leaves with sugar and lime juice in a tall glass
  2. Use a pestle or a large spoon to crush the ingredients
  3. Fill the glass with ice cubes
  4. Add the rum
  5. Top with sparkling water

Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan

Enjoy one of America’s finest cocktails, the cosmopolitan, a favourite with the ladies and the gents!

How to make a cosmopolitan

Ingredients

  • 30 ml of lemon flavoured vodka
  • 15 ml of Triple Sec (Grand Marnier, or Cointreau)
  • 8 ml of lime juice
  • 45 ml cranberry juice

Method

  1. Place all ingredients in a Boston type shake
  2. Fill three-quarters of ice cream
  3. Shake vigorously
  4. Filter with a sieve in a previously cooled martini glass
  5. Garnish with lime

Piña Colada

Pina Colada

A piña colada is the perfect drink to start enjoy on board a cruising holiday, with tangy pineapple and tropical coconut.

How to make a piña colada

Ingredients

  • 20 ml of white rum
  • 20 ml of brown rum
  • 120 ml of pineapple juice (pure juice)
  • 45 ml of coconut cream or sweet coconut milk
  • 5 or 6 crushed ice cubes
  • 1 piece of fresh pineapple cut into a triangle about 1 cm thick
  • 1 maraschino cherry

Method

  1. In a blender, place ice cubes, white rum, brown rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice
  2. Mix the ingredients until a creamy consistency (maximum 10 seconds)
  3. Pour into a tulip glass
  4. Garnish with a piece of pineapple and a maraschino cherry
